Reading Focus: Novel StudyDuring this unit, student will read through the novel The Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Students will engage with the novel in two ways.
Lord of the Flies is a 1954 novel by Nobel Prize–winning British author William Golding. The book focuses on a group of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. The novel has been generally well received. It was named in the Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 41 on the editor's list, and 25 on the reader's list. In 2003 it was listed at number 70 on the BBC's The Big Read poll, and in 2005 Time magazine named it as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. The first is in a more traditional manner, by reading through the book as a class and answering questions based on their readings. The second way students will engage with the novel is through the creation of a Bloom Ball. A Bloom Ball is 3-dimensional project that requires students to complete activities moving them through the levels of Bloom's Taxonomy from knowledge to synthesis. A Bloom Ball project offers students at all levels the opportunity to demonstrate their engagement and understand of complex texts. Teachers and students can customize the activities for each panel, challenging students to create a cohesive whole representing their learning. Each panel on the ball represents a level of Bloom's Taxonomy. More panels should be at the application, analysis, and synthesis levels than at the more basic levels. This project challenges students to create a cohesive whole representing their learning. |
Writing Focus: Narrative Fiction
During this unit, students will (week by week) create and illustrate a chapter book of their own.
Students will begin by creating an interesting character, identifying their narrative arc and plotting out their story, which they will then write chapter by chapter on a weekly basis. Along the way, students will illustrate each chapter to add meaning and depth to their stories. In Term 3, students will use these books by reading them to students in earlier grades in order to celebrate and share their achievement as an author. |
